Burn Calories by Standing for an Hour a Day at your Height Adjustable Desk

With the progression of time, our work life has changed, and we spend more time sitting in front of a desk, working on our computers, whether it is at home or in our office.

The average person spends more than half of their day sitting down; this may be in the form of commuting; it could be for work or simply because the way they relax involves sitting too. The issue here is that prolonged sitting can have serious consequences on our health and as a race, we are doing way too much of it.

Research indicates that sitting for more than 8 hours a day can promote depression, obesity, type-2 diabetes, various forms of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and even dementia.  Some sources even go as far as to say that smoking is safer than sitting.

Standing is Preferable to Sitting

The Harvard Health Blog supports the idea that standing for 2 hours per day rather than sitting is wholly beneficial and has significant benefits:

  • Burns calories - standing burns 30% more calories than sitting.

  • Can lower our blood sugar and cholesterol - which will vastly reduce the risk of weight gain and, in turn, the risk of heart disease.

So how exactly does standing at an adjustable desk help with the fight against obesity and the diseases mentioned?

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

University of Chester Sit-Stand Study

A study by the University of Chester in 2013 found that the heart beats on average about 10 times more per minute when we stand than it does while we are sitting. The increased heart rate comes from the extra muscle movement that standing requires, and it has one very important effect — it encourages our bodies to break down food into glucose more effectively, thus we burn more calories.

This works out at 50 additional calories burnt per hour, which may not seem like a lot on its own, but when you start applying that number to longer periods, it works out at 750 calories per five-day work week, or a whopping 30,000 calories per year.

More and more offices have started to introduce these desks.
